Flying Finale, Duxford October 2024

IWM DUXFORD, flying finale

Saturday 5th October.

This was the last flying day for Duxford for this season. It’s really a small air show costing less and with less flying than the major events, but promised to be an interesting lineup for the end of year. The usual Duxford aircraft Spitfires, Hurricanes, Mustangs and Thunderbolts etc were part of this display and we’re all excellent. As. it was end of season two Duxford regulars, Sally B (B17) and “Miss Pick me up”, (Catalina) were not flying. However, the three highlights that I had looked forward to were the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Lancaster doing a display, the RAF Typhoon display aircraft and the finale of the show the RAF Red Arrows. All can be seen in my images below.

The photography had the usual Duxford problem of the flightline orientation and the low sun meant that half of the display was shooting into a bright light and almost impossible. I had located at the M11 end of the airshow to try and get images of the aircraft top side as they banked in from the M11 for a run down the airfield. I did get some good shots,. The display lasted from just before 2 pm to just before 5 pm and for a change Duxford kept to the flying list other than the World War I aircraft were withdrawn due to strong winds. A great afternoon, for the most part it was sunny, however the car park situation on leaving was very poor. It seemed the traffic marshalls took about 45 minutes to get in place and have an effect. It took an hour to leave the car park.
