Battle of Britain Airshow
Sunday 15th September, IMW Duxford.
The Battle of Britain is an annual event at Iwm duxford carrying siding with the start of the Battle of Britain in 1940. It is a large airshow themed around the aircraft of the era. The weather forecast was it for it to be dry up until about 5 pm with good clear skies until about 2 o’clock and clouding over in the afternoon. This proved to be accurate.
As always, I was looking to improve on my previous airshoe photography. And also there were a couple of special less frequent items on the agenda that I wanted to see. Primarily this was the fly past by the Battle of Britain Flight Avro Lancaster and the Duxford based B 17 Sally B. They flew together at last year‘s event and are repeated this year. This is only the second time they have flown together in 22 years.
In addition I wanted to see the RAF red falcon parachute display team and the RAF typhoon display plane, flown by flight Lieutenant Bill Turnbill, call sign “Turbo”.
I attended the event with an old school friend, Jeff Turrell, who came down from Norfolk for the day. I arrived at 7:45 am alarm, and queued for 15 minutes to get onto the site. Set up my chair adjacent to where the B-17 is usually parked on the flight line. This was towards the M11 end of the airfield. This meant that I was shooting against the light, but had a better chance of viewing the aircraft as they came in from the M1 and where they turn into the airfield topside.
The photographs below are in the order of the timetable that was flown. So the early shots are from walking along the flight line and some scenes of the wide event. This was a great event, the best Duxford show this year, and better than the equivalent show last year. I got some good photographs, but nothing better than I already had taken earlier this year at other airshows.
