Northumberland, Holy Island
11th June, Northumberland
Day 3 of my trip to Northumberland, the Wednesday. Keith and I decided that we would do a joint visit out to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. Again, the light was harsh and overhead. We arrived mid morning and there were already a large number of tourists on the island. Parked in the usual car park and walked the approximately 400 yards to The Lindisfarne Priory site. Had a good walk around looking for different angles and different views, and trying to make use of the poppies in the scene. From the Priory we headed out across the field and onto the Harbour side. Along the Harbour side there are a variety of boats pulled out of the water some upturned together with the very old Herring boats which have been turned upside down and turned into sheds. Many of these have now been recovered with waterproof materials, which makes them less attractive to photograph however, I got one of two shots with the castle in the background. Again, I chose not to walk round to the castle as this was a good half a mile additional walking, which I wasn’t feeling up to.
Due to the timing of the low tide which dictates being able to cross the causeway to the island, this visit was around late morning, and I had to leave the island by 1 PM or risk being cut off. I would still like to revisit the island either early in the morning or later in the evening at sunset but that’s not in my control. it’s the timing of the tides at the time of my visit which dictates access to the island.
