Watatunga (Very very cold !)
13th January, Watatunga (near Downham Market), Norfolk
Watatunga is a Wildlife Park in Norfolk about 5 miles south of Kings Lynn. It has a special status in that it is a breeding site for African and Asian antelopes and deer. What makes it unusual is that many of the grasses on the site are of African or Asian origin meaning that the animals Are raised eating their native food and therefore the bacteria and enzymes in their digestive system are native to their homeland. This uniquely allows animals from Watatunga to be relocated back to for instance Kenya without having to go through any quarantine or a acclimatisation period.
About once a month Watatunga run a photographic Safari around the site before the site opens to the public. This was one of those days. Arriving for 8:45 the tour started at 9 am. The temperature was -5 Celsius with a slight windchill from being in an open trailer. The vehicle crisscrossed the park while we looked for the animals, and aiming to approach them from a direction that allowed decent photography.
The tour lasted about 2 1/2 hours and the highlight for me was the picture of the Ram surrounded by the frosty Bracken and grasses.
