Cambridge American War Cemetary

The Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial site in England, 30.5 acres in total, was donated by the University of Cambridge. It lies on a slope with the west and south sides framed by woodland. The cemetery contains the remains of 3,811 of our war dead; 5,127 names are recorded on the Walls of the Missing. Rosettes mark the names of those since recovered and identified. Most died in the Battle of the Atlantic or in the strategic air bombardment of northwest Europe.

Entrance to the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial site

A visit to the Cambridge American cemetery has been something I had been thinking of for the last couple of years. It’s open from 9 am to 5 pm every day other than Christmas, I chose to visit late afternoon arriving about 3 pm. To understand the layout you need to see a photograph from the year. However it’s effectively a quarter of a circle when viewed from above. On the south side of the site is a long water feature that runs the length of the cemetery culminating in a chapel of remembrance. The grounds are immaculate, very well maintained and walking about looking at all of the white crosses is a very moving experience. Photography is allowed for personal use as long as it’s respectful. I tried to capture that in the images that I’ve taken and shown below.
