Sheringham and Cromer
Wednesday 2nd October
No visit to Norfolk is complete for me without a visit to Sheringham. I headed there arriving mid Wednesday morning. I parked in the small car park close to the museum on the seafront. I usually visit the town centre and then the West End of town, today I decided to go along the eastern Promenade. There were a lot of brightly coloured beach huts, all closed as the summer was over. This made for some interesting photographs come up with the cliffs in the background and the sea defences.
I then returned along the front and noticed for the first time the artwork on the concrete of the seafront. This included a huge mural of prehistoric times featuring predominantly Mammoths, a tribute to the old Mammoth skeleton found a few miles up the coast. I stopped for lunch and had a crab sandwich. After lunch the Sun came out and I spent another 30 minutes wandering back to the car.
I then headed to Cromer and found a parking space on the clifftop car park. It’s about a quarter of a mile walk down towards the pier and down the cliff side. I visited the pier, purchased some chips from No 1 Cromer, and fed the gulls. From here I went to the Lifeboat station at the end of the pier and then walked back up the cliff and through the town to the car.
It was near mid afternoon and the sun had gone in and it was getting overcast and windy. I decided to stop at Happisburgh on my way back to Caister. This is the location of a very photogenic red and white Lighthouse on the cliff top. On arrival coastal erosion had taken even more of the cliff away, and it won’t be long before they have to shore up or move the car park. I took a few pictures of the Lighthouse, nothing remarkable but it was just nice to see it.
